As well as running Newark Livestock Market the Gascoines Group also farms in its own right, running two farms – Mill Farm, Upton, Nottinghamshire and Rudda Farm, Staintondale, near Scarborough.

Mill Farm, which the group has owned for many years totals 400 acres, with 300 acres of arable land let on a Farm Business Tenancy and 100 acres of grassland which is home to the Gascoines herd of 40 pedigree Limousin cows managed by experienced stockman Alisdair Smith.

Rudda Farm at Staintondale was purchased in 1994 when it was a 270-acre farm. Since this time we have purchased another 355 acres all adjoining our land, bringing the farm up to 625 acres with good, modern buildings. This farm is managed by Stewart Robinson who has overall responsibility for the farm’s cattle at Rudda and arable enterprises.

The suckler herd, which now stands at 400 cows is largely based on Limousin bloodlines with a Salers bull used on heifers, with a number of replacement females kept from this crossing programme. The aim of this commercially run suckler herd is to produce top quality finished stock which are sold through Newark Livestock Market on a regular basis.

The pedigree herd at Mill Farm has been established to provide a source of top quality Limousin genetics for the commercial herd and a small number of bulls for sale locally.

As such the pedigree herd is fully performance recorded and has recently started a rigorous programme of health testing for BVD, IBR, Johnes and Leptospirosis.

Stock bulls currently working in the pedigree herd include the highly thought of Dinmore Escort, a Wildoge Vantastic son which is full brother to the noted female Dinmore Elle, and the recently purchased Mereside Hallmark. This exciting Dormeur son is out of the Vagabond daughter Mereside Enabel and was bought for 18,000gns in February 2014.
