A strong commercial demand underpinned Saturday’s trade at the Multi Breed Event at Newark Livestock Market, which saw a top price of 5000gns for the male and reserve overall Simmental champion.
Sale leader and coming through as champion Simmental under judge Brian Wise was Burghbridge Bradley from Otley-based Charles Clarke. By Brinkton Major and out of the Strathisla Popeye daughter Burghbridge Emily, he was knocked down to Paul Gunther for his Fircovert herd, Norwich.
Next in the money at 4000gns was a bull from the same home, this time Burghbridge Briar, another Major son, this time out of a Popeye daughter Burghbridge Vienna. Buyer here was G White and Son, Alford, Lincs.
The second prize Williams Connolly from Hayley Clarke, Hevingham, Norfolk, then sold at 3000gns. This one is by the successful show bull Heathbrow Tristar and is out of a Dirnanean Reformer daughter Tillymaud Danielle 33rd and sold to A Greave, Retford, while at the same money was the Dowley family, Lieston, Suffolk, sold Theberton Bomber, a Burghbridge Nero son out of a Craighill Number One daughter, to James Knight Farms, Faulkingham.
The Simmental female and overall champion, Midhope Vixen 2nd, from Messrs Hollingsworth sold for 3200gns. Born February 2010, she is by Dirnanean Snowie and is out of the Pasturehouse Paleface daughter Midhope Vixen and carries a TSI of +87 and an SRI of +85. Buyer here was Messrs Fovargue Bros, Coalville. The same buyers also purchased the reserve female champion, Grangewood Beverly from the Leedham family, at 3100gns. This one is February 2010-born as well and is by the Starline Klassik son Tilbrook Turpin and is out of Grangewood Tanya, who is a daughter of Riverdale Figaro.
At 3300gns, R W and B I Arnold, Enderby, Leics, purchased Charles Clarke’s first prize heifer, Burghbridge Crystal 5th. This one is by the Strathisla Julius son Brinkton Major and is out of the Strathisla Popeye daughter Burghbridge Crystal 2nd.
Sale leader in the small Charolais offering and second highest price of the day was the December 2007-born cow Culford Cherish from C N Flack and Co, Bury St Edmonds, Suffolk. This Bova Sylvain daughter is out of the Mowbraypark Napoleon daughter Darhsams Ascot and was knocked down at 4200gns to Messrs McInnes and McMillan, Kings Lynn. Her bull calf, by Holstead Cracker sold separately for 950gns to Messrs Harrison.
Just before that the September 2010-born Brampton Fixation from Billy Turner, Ripon, North Yorkshire, sold at 3500gns. This one is a Prime Roberto son out of a Bassett Pearlyking daughter and was purchased by Robert Gatherer, Renfrewshire, while at 3000gns he also sold Brampton Fleetstreet, a Trefonnen Crouch son out of a Mortimers Ulstar daughter, to W T Greatholder, Turnditch, Derbyshire.
Leading trade for the British Blonde cattle on offer at 3500gns was Richmond, North Yorks-based Eileen Wilson with her April 2010-born bull Aprilton Fieldsman. By the Royal Highland Show first prize winner Lochend Charlie, he is out of a daughter of the Carlisle champion Hilltop Nick, Mortons Rosebud, and sold to Flintham Grange Farms, Newark.
Just before that A J Wilshaw, Wigton, Cumbria, sold the July 2009-born Elmhirst Enoch, a Furness Universe son out of the Calvo Midge daughter Elmhurst Rumtruffle, for 2700gns to Bowes Farms Ltd.
British Blues sold to a top of 3400gns for Brookfield Ensign from Steven Potter, Thirsk, North Yorkshire. This August 2009-born son of Brookfield Chief is out of Urbi De Bois Borsu daughter Brookfield Claudia and was knocked down to G and D M Howsam, Boston, Lincs.
And selling for 3200gns was previous British Blonde vendor, Eileen Wilson, whose Aprilton Freddie, a May 2010-born Aprilton Buster son out of the Aprilton Riff Raff daughter Aprilton Apple changed hands to Dan Byard, Derbyshire.
The best of the Salers bulls was a call of 3300gns from Bowes Farms, Kings Lynn, Norfolk, who purchased Rigel Ifor from Messrs Rigel, North Yorkshire. This Sagitaire son is out of the Crocodile daughter Rigel Ono. The same vendors also sold Rigel Orfeo, another Sagitaire son, this time out of the Mosstock Intouch daughter Rigel Orpheus at 3100gns to B G Peberdy, Leicester.
