A catalogue packed with deep breeding didn’t disappoint at Saturday’s dispersal of the Bailgate herd of Limousins for J Ward Farming, with prices hitting a high of 7000gns.
Sale leader was the January 2006-born Carlton Baroness. Originally bred by the Wilson family, Louth, this one is a Junior daughter out of the Carlton Peter daughter Carlton Upstanding who also carries Broadmeadows David and Mereside Monarch in her pedigree.
She sold empty having calving in April with her heifer calf at foot by Hudscales Earl for 7000gns to telephone bidders Sarah and Ed Layton, Leominster, Herefordshire.
Following that the next best was a call of 6000gns came for pedigree British Blue bull Littlewood Edmonton. This ET-bred June 2009-born son of Empire D’Ochain is out of the Visconti daughter Ridge Dean Rona. He sold to Baumber Park Farms, Lincolnshire.
A November 2010-born heifer then sold at 5500gns, with this being Bailgate Flutter, a Glenrock Ventura daughter. Out of the Vivaldi daughter Larkhill Christine she sold having been served to homebred sire Bailgate Gino to Paul Dawes for his Dinmore herd, Herefordshire.
At 4700gns Messrs Cardwell, Doncaster, bought Greenwell Donatella, a March 2008-born cow. This Vagabond daughter is out of the Tiret daughter Greenwell Agnes and sold eight months in calf to Ulm.
Then at 4000gns Messrs Waring purchased Bailgate Glenda, a March 2011-born Procters Commander daughter out of the Junior daughter Carlton Baroness, the day’s sale leader. This one had been AI’d to Glenrock Ventura.
Griff Morris, Carmarthen, then secured Bailgate Emily at 3900gns. She is a May 2009-born Ampertaine Abracadbra daughter, this time out of the Tiret-sired Greenwell Agnes, making her maternal sister to the previously mentioned 4700gns Greenwell Donatella. She sold having been AI’d to Swarland Eddie, sire of the commercial champion at this year’s Balmoral Show.
Just shy of that at 3800gns was Bailgate Daisy, an October 2008-born cow by Kype Orkney. This one is out of the Jockey daughter Corridan Sophie and was AI’d to Ulm and sold with a beef value of +35 to the Jerman family, Powys, for the Glangwden herd.
A pair then sold at 3600gns, with the first of these being Bailgate Floozy, a Vivaldi daughter out of Greenwell Darcy, a Vagabond daughter. She sold with her January-born heifer calf Bailgate Ipad at foot and was knocked down to Messrs Ward.
Second to make this price was Bailgate Gertie, a daughter of 50,000gns sire Wilodge Cerberus out of Carlton Bella, another Junior daughter. This January 2011-born heifer sold six months in calf to Bailgate Gino and was bought by N Carlisle, Nottinghamshire.
And making 3500gns was Corridan Candice, a Haltcliffe Ullswater daughter out of Corridan Tammy, a Cloughhead Lord daughter. Bred by Corridan Farms, this one sold due shortly to Reddings Alfie and was taken by Newark-based James Burnett.
